If you want to experience the true beauty of the English countryside then there is no place more stunning than the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, north-west England. The National Park is pure natural splendour and contains Englands highest mountain, Scafell Pike, as well as Englands biggest natural lake, Lake Windermere. The park is continuous mountains and lakes, occasionally dotted with cute little English towns and villages. The land is used a lot or farming so you will see your fair share of fields full of sheep, horses, and cows. Postcard material everywhere you look!

To experience a true English holiday though, you need to stay in a cottage that is older than some countries, has grand wooden beams, a roaring fireplace, a big cosy bed, and sheep outside your window.

My girlfriend Annie and I stayed in one such cottage in the south of the Lake District at the foot of Coniston water and Lake Windermere. The Garden Cottage is on a piece of land called Howe Foot in the town of Lowick and can be booked through Sally’s Cottages

The location and views from the cottage were simply perfect. Situated down a narrow and long gravel track that you could easily miss coming off the main town road lies Howe Foot. This is a collection of three buildings in beautiful surroundings; the main building is where the owner lives, another for storage, and the third is your cottage! Living next to the owner is no bother, you only ever see them when they let you into the cottage and show you around!

Everywhere you look is like a postcard, you can enjoy the views from your own little terrace that is right next to your cottage which contains chairs and a cool slate table. Running through the bottom of the land is a relaxing stream that is surrounded by perfectly manicured plants!

The cottage contains 4 perfectly sized rooms; the kitchen, living room, bedroom and bathroom. The kitchen contains many wooden beams and beautiful slate work tops. It also has a traditional Rayburn cooker which has a hot plate on top. The design of this cooker means it needs to be constantly on making the kitchen lovely and warm!

The living room contains a cosy sofa, tv, and a roaring fireplace making the room perfect for relaxing in after a long days hiking! There’s plenty of wood and kindling for you to make a fire whenever you want!

The bedroom has a cute little window right above the bed with a quintessentially British view of a field of sheep. These sheep move about a lot and often come right up to the window; you may be woken up by a “Baaaaa!” every now and then!

The bed itself is huge and is one of the comfiest I have ever slept in. A healthy dose of blankets and pillows make it super cosy, especially when it’s raining outside!

The bathroom is just off the bedroom and contains a small but elegant shower to clean up after your adventures for the day!

The Garden Cottage at Howe Foot is the perfect little retreat for your stay in whilst exploring the Lake District. Living in a traditional English cottage, with a roaring fireplace, sheep outside your window, and a big cosy bed, can’t be beaten. If the weather is good enough for you to go on walks and hikes then you can relax in your cottage after a long day of exploring. If the weather is poor then you have possibly one of the best places to snuggle up to each other and listen to the rain.
